worship brings blessing

Know how it is sometimes when you’re bustling about your work, distractedly juggling lists in your mind and trying to pull everything together to accomplish a torrent of tasks? Then amid the whirl, something pierces your spirit, and you find yourself absolutely still, pondering…

That happened to me this week. We’re trying to get ready to move in a few weeks, and the house we’re moving into is still very unfinished. I have little packing done, and I’ve been going almost berserk trying to organize and execute everything that needs to happen in the next days. Overall I feel cheerful and energetic, but I still have shadowy moments when anxiety seeps and swells in the crevices of my soul. Thursday morning I felt exhausted and stressed. Then I read this Facebook post by Dwight Gingrich that I’m sharing with his permission:

“I recently finished reading through Chronicles during my near-daily devotional time. The biggest takeaway for me is the most obvious: the importance of being faithful in our time and place. In particular, the importance of being faithful in our worship.

To worship the true God in the ways he has directed is the most influential thing you can do for the good of those around you. I’m not talking about the regulative principle, theologian readers; I am simply talking about, for the Christian, worshiping God through Christ. This is especially true if God has placed you in any position of leadership–as a parent, a husband, a teacher in a school or congregation, or an elder in Christ’s church.

Your faithful worship of the true God can bring many blessings upon those around you. I don’t understand how that all works, and how it interacts with individual responsibility and blessing, but I know it is true. (See 1 Corinthians 7:14 for support from Paul for this idea.)

So if I want to help change the world, may I begin today by remembering to worship God, through Christ, with the presence of the indwelling Spirit.”

My spirit quieted, and I realized that underneath all the frenzy whispered the age-old lie, “You are not enough.”

I don’t parent as well as I wish. I don’t touch others with acts of love as much as I wish. I don’t get as much work done as I wish. I am never enough.

And yet, when the focus shifts off me, and onto my heavenly Father, a strange sort of multiplication happens. Worship opens up my spirit and God’s presence fills me up and spills over to my children, to my neighbors, to my church family. God’s presence in me grows and touches and loves in ways that I cannot.

I may not be enough, but worshiping God through Christ is. His presence brings blessing because He is always enough.

“So if I want to help change the world, may I begin today by remembering to worship God, through Christ, with the presence of the indwelling Spirit.”
