Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Me

1. I once licked a pig’s snout to earn $2.50. When my (then) future mother-in-law found that out, she said she always did want frugal wives for her sons.

2. I didn’t get along with my 7th grade teacher, and I’m not even sure why. He was a very good teacher and I learned a lot. We are friends, now.

3. The benches at my church in Pennsylvania were old wooden ones that weren’t fastened to the floor properly. During an evening of revival meetings, as we all knelt to pray, the bench in front of me rocked and landed on the corner of my skirt. When everyone else got up, I discovered to my horror that I was pinned to the floor!

4. The year I turned 16 was the worst year of my life. Horrible beyond description. But just before I went under for surgery, I felt the physical presence of Jesus for the first time.

5. I spent a month in Romania that year, too, so there was another bright spot. One of the times we went to a remote village church, I was startled to see a choir member innocently singing from a folder that had a cartoon of Bill Clinton and a steaming pie with the English words COW PIE on it.

6. When I lived in Iowa, my younger sister and I used to sneak out to my dad’s Calvary Cassettes office and call random numbers in the phone book. When someone answered, we sang Jesus Loves Me, because we thought that was evangelizing.

7. As a teen, I worried that either a). I wouldn’t get married because nobody would want a deaf wife or b). I’d marry someone who was nice but wasn’t very smart or c.) he would be nice AND smart but look like a frog. I shouldn’t have worried.

8. I won a national writing contest for deaf people in my senior year of high school. I can only credit my hard-working parents for teaching me good speech and grammar.

9. The hardest I ever laughed in my life was at a baptismal service.

10. I accidentally emptied about half of our neighbor’s milk tank one time. Their kindness and forgiveness in a time of extreme embarrassment and shame was a lesson I never forgot.

Remembering snippets of my past and giggling over some of them helps me through some heavy days. I’d love to hear what I don’t know about you!

It’s too bad your lips are sealed on the baptism laughter! A church brother and I got very amused at a feet washing service once. When it was our turn to wash each others feet he sat down and the small rectangular tubs that held the water were turned sideways. This worked fine for the smaller footed guys, but my foot washing brother was a pretty big guy and he was having a hard time getting his foot in. So somewhere in the process I noticed the problem we were having and I turned the tub long ways to accommodate his longer foot. We both got tickled, but hey, isn’t feet washing supposed the symbolize good service to others? Including the big feet people??

  2. I was baptized in a church elder’s home. I was nervous and kept putting my elbows in between the bars of the back of the kitchen chair I was sitting in. When it came time for me to get up to be baptized, I was stuck.

#6 had me laughing fairly hard.
